Brood X has not been above ground since 2004. After this spring, it will disappear again for 17 more years!
Annual cicadas emerge every year. Others, called periodical cicadas appear at either 13 or 17 year intervals. They live most of their lives underground and only emerge to mate. So if you hear the “summertime” sound of cicadas buzzing in the trees, let’s give them a break. Don’t panic. They won’t attack and they don’t bite. Many will become food for the very large cicada killer wasp! If you see the wasps digging holes in your lawn, you can call for help with them.
