Types of Pests

Common ants like the carpenter ant and odorous house ant are prevalent in New Jersey. Carpenter ants can damage wood structures, while odorous house ants are often drawn to food sources inside the home.

Carpet beetles feed on natural fibers like wool, silk, and feathers, causing damage to carpets, clothing, and upholstery. Their larvae are often the culprits behind this destruction.

Camel/Cave Crickets (also commonly referred to as “sprickets”) are a common basement, crawlspace, and garage invader. Untreated they can slowly make their way into your living area. Often times entering the home as the temperature lowers in fall months and taking up residence in the winter.

Fleas are small, parasitic insects that infest pets and homes, causing itching and irritation. They can spread diseases like tapeworms and bubonic plague and are often brought into homes by pets.

Moths can be troublesome in New Jersey. They feed on fabrics and stored food, causing damage to clothing, carpets, and pantry goods.

Rats and mice are common pests in New Jersey, often invading homes in search of food and shelter. They can contaminate food, damage property, and spread diseases like hantavirus and salmonella.

Spiders, including common house spiders and more dangerous ones like the black widows, are frequent in New Jersey. While most spiders are harmless, their presence can be unsettling, and some species can cause severe bites.

Stink bugs are shield-shaped insects that emit a foul odor when disturbed. They invade homes during the colder months seeking warmth and can become a nuisance by swarming in large numbers.

Yellowjackets are aggressive wasps that can sting multiple times and are known for their painful bites. They build nests in the ground or wall cavities and can become a threat during late summer and fall.
